Soil degradation
Soil degradation is a physical, chemical and biological deterioration of soil qualities.
In Europe, 500 hectares of land are degraded every day.
SOIL DEGRADATION INCLUDES:
SOIL CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION
SOIL FUNCTIONS
CHARACTERISTICS OF HEALTHY SOIL:
- Deep topsoil, depending on soil type
- Balanced nutrients and correct pH
- Good drainage
- Usable water permeability and retention capacity and resistance to adverse conditions
- Good slope
- Strong and diverse microbial populations
- No toxins
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)
Soil conservation treatments
Conservation agriculture is based on three main principles:
- minimal mechanical disturbance of the soil (by direct placement of seeds and/or fertilizer);
- permanent soil organic cover, with at least 30% with crop residues and/or cover crops;
- diversification of crops grown in succession and/or in combination.
Modification of the soil cover
- Terracing – modulating the slope and shortening the length of the slope.
- Field protection belts – their main purpose is aimed at combating wind erosion, keeping snow in the plain and preserving moisture.
- Green manuring – growing plants to increase organic matter and nutrients.
European strategies and funding
On November 17, 2021 the EU Strategy for Healthy Soils for 2050was adopted, with tangible actions until 2030 to protect and restore soils and ensure their sustainable use.
A new Soil Health Act by 2023 guarantees a level playing field and a high level of environmental and health protection.
The new EU Soil Strategy 2030 is a key outcome of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030. It will contribute to the objectives of the European Green Deal.
Under the Horizon Europe program to promote carbon farming. Financing – 320 million euros.
